Potaje Gitano de Utrera
Potaje Gitano de Utrera
El Potaje Gitano de Utrera began as a meal and a little flamenco for a local church brotherhood in Utrera (Hermandad de los Gitanos). After finishing their procession for Holy Week they planned a dinner of potaje (garbanzo soup / stew) for the following month. The subsequent event was enjoyed by all and quickly grew into a flamenco festival which today is one of the oldest in Spain. Each year the festival pays tribute to a famous flamenco artist or other important figure, dedicating the event’s performances in their honor. Recent festivals have honored Joaquin Cortés and La Pantoja, as well as the memory of Fernanda y Bernard de Utrera.
