Lebrija “La Caracolá”

Lebrija “La Caracolá”

Now approaching fifty years, this flamenco festival in the town of Lebrija (just south of Seville) was founded in 1966 by a group of local flamenco artists and aficionados.  They envisioned a special flamenco event held in local bars, shops and other venues in the town.  The weeklong festival – now one of the oldest in Andalucia – is held in the month of July with the participation of thousands of carcoles, or little snails which are in season during the summer months and served up fresh during the festival.   Flamenco greats who have taken part in the festival include José Mercé, Perrate, Manuela Carrasco, "El Lebrijano", Curro Malena, Moraito Chico, Miguel Funi, Antonio Núñez "Chocolate", Antonio Carrión, and  Antonio Malena.  And in recent years the culinary aspect of the festival has broadened to include several flamenco inspired dishes beyond the caracoles.
